In a move aimed at accelerating India's digital healthcare ecosystem, the Insurance Regulatory and
Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has advised insurance companies to facilitate the creation
of Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs for individuals purchasing insurance policies. This
initiative supports the government's efforts to make healthcare services more accessible and
digitally connected across the country.
IRDAI Encourages Adoption of ABHA IDs Through Insurance Providers: Key Points
What is an ABHA ID? The ABHA ID is a unique 14-digit number that serves as a digital
health identity for individuals. It enables users to securely store, access, and share their
medical information across participating healthcare providers and institutions.
How Does It Benefit Patients? A key advantage of the ABHA system is convenience.
Individuals can use their digital health account to streamline hospital visits, doctor
consultations, and healthcare registrations. By reducing manual paperwork and registration
procedures, the system helps minimize waiting times and improves the overall patient experience.
Supporting India's Digital Health Mission: The ABHA ID forms an important part of the
Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), an initiative led by the National Health Authority (NHA).
The mission focuses on creating a nationwide digital health infrastructure that connects patients,
healthcare providers, insurers, and medical records through a secure platform.
Growing Adoption Across the Country: The adoption of ABHA IDs has already gained
significant momentum. More than 402.6 million ABHA IDs have been generated nationwide.
The government aims to extend this digital health identity to every citizen, enabling seamless
access to healthcare services and records across India.
Long-Term Vision: By involving insurers in the creation of ABHA IDs, IRDAI is helping
strengthen the link between healthcare and insurance services. The initiative is expected to
support faster access to medical information, improved customer experiences, and greater
participation in India's ongoing digital health transformation.
